Ludhiana buckles under weight of mounting garbage as sanitation staff stir continues

Around 8,800 metric tonnes of uncollected garbage have accumulated across Ludhiana as a strike by about 6,000 sanitation workers of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation continues.

The strike began after an alleged police lathi-charge on sanitation workers in Barnala on July 22; workers demand an FIR against the DSP and SHO concerned.

Garbage heaps at Middha Chowk, Pratap Chowk, Cheema Chowk, and Model Gram have caused traffic snarls and foul odours.

Residents fear the waste during monsoon could attract flies and mosquitoes, clog drains, and worsen hygiene conditions.

Ludhiana generates about 1,100 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste daily, but the strike has disrupted collection and disposal.
