SC proposes special courts for Manipur violence cases; directs CBI, SIT to expedite investigations

The Supreme Court proposed setting up special courts for day-to-day trials in cases from the 2023 Manipur ethnic violence.

The Court directed the CBI and Manipur Special Investigation Team (SIT) to expedite probes and ensure victims receive chargesheet copies promptly.

The Bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana noted victims had not received chargesheets from the CBI and SIT.

The Court allowed legal aid counsel to approach Gauhati and Manipur high courts for chargesheet copies.

The Manipur High Court was directed to examine cases of 30 persons missing since the ethnic clashes began.
