Govt proposes mandatory Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication systems from Oct 2028 to cut road crashes

India's road transport ministry proposes mandating Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication systems in all new vehicles from October 2028.

The draft notification covers two- and three-wheelers, cars, buses, and trucks, requiring compliance with the automotive standard AIS-230 for vehicles equipped with V2V from October 2027.

V2V technology enables real-time exchange of speed, direction, position, and braking data between vehicles to prevent collisions at blind curves and intersections without needing a cellular network.

The system alerts drivers to risks like sudden braking, unsafe lane changes, wrong-way driving, and approaching emergency vehicles, complementing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

The government will later roll out Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication, installing sensors on infrastructure like signals, poles, and bridges to alert vehicles.
