Karnataka Records Major Jump in Folic Acid Intake Among Expectant Mothers
in5points
Karnataka recorded a sharp increase in iron-folic acid consumption among pregnant women, rising to 78.9% in NFHS-6 from 44.7% in NFHS-5.
The share of women consuming IFA for 180 days or more increased from 26.7% to 66.4%, reducing risk of neural tube defects.
Greater awareness among pregnant women and doctors contributed to the rise, with earlier and more consistent supplementation.
Dr Hemavathi Srinivasan noted that women conceiving in their 30s are more aware of folic acid's role in preventing birth defects.
Doctors highlighted that continuity of use, supply issues, and postpartum consumption remain challenges despite the improvement.
