Haryana: INLD demands inspection of irrigation infrastructure

INLD leader Sampat Singh urged the Haryana assembly's standing committee on irrigation to conduct an immediate technical inspection of state irrigation infrastructure.

Years of neglect have put the Bhakra and Yamuna systems under severe stress, with critical links like Narwana Branch–Karnal Link and Sirsa Branch failing to balance water distribution.

Singh alleged Haryana's rightful water share was reduced from two-thirds under the 1954 Yamuna Water Agreement to 47% after a 1994 agreement signed under pressure.

Internal water diversions from the Bhakra system cause chronic shortages in tail-end areas such as Nalwa and Adampur, with capacity of the Bhakra Main Barwala Link Channel dropping from 1,750 cusecs to 1,250 cusecs.

A July 15 inspection found widespread structural damage, including cracks at Khanauri head, clogged canals, and obstructed Dharodhi siphons blocked by dead animals and debris.
