‘Cases of children with Type 1 diabetes spiralling 6% to 7% annually’

Type 1 paediatric diabetes cases in India are rising 6% to 7% annually, with 19,000 new children expected each year.

Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children in Mumbai treats over 1,300 children with Type 1 diabetes, detecting about one new child per week.

Dr Sudha Rao reported 50 new cases from January to June 2026, up from 72 in all of 2025.

Doctors at Wadia Hospital are developing an app to support paediatric diabetes patients and their caregivers.
