India, 4 other nations face 100% tariffs as US Senate advances Russia sanctions bill
The US Senate voted 86-12 to advance the “Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia Act of 2026”, authorizing tariffs of up to 100% on India and four other countries for purchasing Russian energy.
The bill is expected to pass a final Senate vote later this week after clearing the procedural hurdle.
Senator Richard Blumenthal said the bill targets China and India as the main purchasers of Russian oil and gas, which fund Russia's war machine.
Indian imports of Russian crude rose to record levels in June 2026, reaching €4.5 billion, after a prior 25% tariff penalty was lifted in February.
The legislation also renews a set of Iran sanctions due to expire at the end of the year.
