in5points
The India Meteorological Department escalated warnings from yellow to orange and finally red by 12:25 pm as heavy rain battered Delhi-NCR.
Affected areas included ITO, Nizamuddin, South Extension, the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurgaon.
Four weather systems converged: the monsoon trough, the season's first Bay of Bengal depression, a low-pressure area over southwest Rajasthan, and an upper-air cyclonic circulation over northern Uttar Pradesh.
Delhi's July rainfall was trailing normal before Tuesday, with Safdarjung recording 160.3 mm against a monthly normal of 195.8 mm.
