‘Harassment, police inaction’ drive four of family to self-immolation bid on Sant Kabir Nagar DM office premises

Four members of a family attempted self-immolation at the Sant Kabir Nagar district magistrate's office over alleged harassment and police inaction.

The family said the head of the household, a fruit and juice stall owner, was repeatedly assaulted and threatened by locals.

Despite multiple complaints, no effective police action was taken, leading to the extreme step.

Police intervened, preventing the self-immolation, and later booked nine persons for an assault on July 28.

Two police constables were suspended for negligence in handling the earlier complaint.
