BMC appoints former MU V-C to re-investigate fatal Chembur tree collapse

BMC appointed botanist Prof Sanjay V Deshmukh, former University of Mumbai vice-chancellor, to lead a one-member committee re-investigating the June 30 Chembur tree collapse.

The re-investigation follows rejection of BMC's preliminary inquiry by mayor Ritu Tawde and the general body for lacking depth and failing to fix responsibility.

The committee will assess technical and scientific aspects including engineering, botany, soil science, and public administration to determine root cause and evaluate interim measures.

Prof Deshmukh is tasked with proposing long-term policy reforms to prevent similar incidents, with findings due within a month.

The incident involved a Peepal tree falling on a school bus, killing 11-year-old Vihan Srivastav and injuring four other students.
