UP monsoon deficit widens to 27% against 6% last year

Uttar Pradesh's monsoon deficit widened to 27% by July 31, 2026, with 261.4 mm rainfall against a normal of 357.6 mm, compared to a 6% deficit last year.

East Uttar Pradesh faces a 34% deficit (254.2 mm against 385.2 mm), while West Uttar Pradesh has a 15% deficit (271.7 mm against 318.9 mm).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts below-normal rainfall across most of the state in August and the latter half of the monsoon season, except isolated areas.

Lucknow's deficit reached 44% (176.8 mm against 317.3 mm), while Varanasi and Prayagraj recorded deficits of 50% (185.3 mm) and 42% (190.1 mm), respectively.

Statewide, 34 districts have deficient rainfall (-20% to -59%), and 14 districts have "large deficient" rainfall.
