3 years on, SIT probe complete in just 10% of Manipur riot cases

Supreme Court was informed that SITs of Manipur police have completed probes into only 10% of the 3,020 riot cases, with chargesheets filed in 301 cases and trial commenced in 10.

CBI has filed chargesheets in 21 of the 31 cases referred to it, closure reports in six, and continues investigations in four cases.

SC mulled setting up special courts to exclusively try riot cases and sought responses from Manipur government and high courts of Assam and Manipur.

Senior advocate Ngangom Junior Luwang complained that no effort was made to trace 30 missing people; SC asked him to approach Manipur High Court.

SC directed the government to stop encroachment of places of worship vandalized during clashes, while prioritizing reconstruction of damaged dwelling units.
