Punjab: After 3 years, ₹10-crore onion excellence centre project begins in Sangrur

The ₹10-crore Centre of Excellence for Onion project in Sangrur, delayed for three years, has commenced construction in Chural Kalan village, Lehragaga block.

The project was originally planned for Kheri village but relocated due to plans for a government medical college there.

The Indo-Dutch project aims to boost crop diversification and increase onion yield from 22.3 to 30 metric tonnes per hectare.

Punjab's onion production (2,25,000 MT) meets less than half of its demand (6,00,000 MT).

The centre will train farmers in onion cultivation, nursery preparation, seed production, and storage; completion is expected in nine months.
