A 17-year-old boy, Sohel Ibrahim, drowned in Nagla Lake in Nalasopara East on Sunday afternoon while fishing with friends.
Sohel entered the water after his fishing rod was shaky and was swept away in the swollen lake; his body had not been recovered by late Sunday evening.
The Mira-Bhayandar-Vasai-Virar police had prohibited swimming and entering waterbodies in the region due to heavy monsoon rains.
Local residents and officials accused the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVMC) of failing to secure the lake with barriers or warning boards despite repeated demands.
