America's largest ghost towns, with homes and a hospital still standing

Eagle Mountain, a California ghost town, was founded in 1948 by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser to house 4,000 iron miners and their families.

The town had over 400 homes, a shopping center, schools, a bowling alley, and a hospital, serving the mining community.

The Eagle Mountain mine operated from 1948 to 1983, producing iron ore for Kaiser Steel's Fontana mill, and became the largest iron mine in the western U.S.

In 1977, the mine shipped its 100 millionth ton of iron ore; its peak annual production in 1975 exceeded 350,000 tons.

Kaiser's integrated healthcare system for workers at Eagle Mountain directly influenced the creation of Kaiser Permanente, a major U.S. healthcare organization.
