Canada joins next-generation fighter jet programme led by UK, Italy and Japan

Canada joined the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) as its first observer nation.

GCAP is a sixth-generation fighter jet initiative led by the UK, Italy, and Japan, launched in 2022.

As an observer, Canada gains privileged access to capability development and industrial collaboration discussions, with no financial commitment at this stage.

The programme aims to develop a next-generation stealth fighter by 2035, led by BAE Systems, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Leonardo.
