World's first motel in California listed for sale

The world's first motel, originally called the Milestone Mo-Tel, opened in 1925 in San Luis Obispo, California, with rooms for $1.25.

The 4.2-acre site closed in 1991 and is now for sale, listed by Hayes Commercial Group with no fixed asking price.

Current owners CoVelop and Rossi Enterprises, who bought the property in 2017, have secured city approvals for an 83-room hotel with a swimming pool.

Buyers can also pursue an assisted living facility for older adults or a mixed-use residential project, as suggested by marketing materials.

The term 'mo-tel' was coined by architect Arthur Heineman, who shortened 'motor hotel' where drivers could park outside their rooms.
