Supreme Court takes exception to meagre compensation for ex-HC judges

Supreme Court took exception to meagre compensation for retired High Court chief justices and judges, which varies across states.

A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant asked the Union government to form a committee in two weeks to lay down uniform pan-India guidelines.

The committee will consider basic minimum security and services, including driver, domestic help, secretarial services, and telephone/internet expenses, for retired HC judges.

The Supreme Court emphasized that retired judges need facilities for a dignified life, not a luxurious one.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the court that a committee would be constituted within two weeks to study issues and submit recommendations within three months.
