India’s first, 2 geothermal wells commissioned in Ladakh

Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena commissioned India's first and deepest geothermal wells at Puga valley, Ladakh.

ONGC Energy Centre executed two 1,000m-deep geothermal wells at an altitude over 14,000 ft.

The wells are critical for the 1MW pilot geothermal power project, India's first demonstration-scale geothermal power project.

Maximum temperature of 135°C was recorded at 400m depth; further testing aims for higher temperatures.

The first well reached 1,000m on May 22, 2026; the second was completed on July 8, 2026, after renewal of a tripartite MoU.
