Deluge in Assam: Factors that led to unprecedented flooding in 2 districts

Unprecedented flooding severely affected Assam's Charaideo and Sibsagar districts in July 2026, with 48 of 66 flood-related deaths occurring there.

Nearly 500,000 people in around 400 villages across the two districts were affected, with 15,000 taking shelter in relief camps.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attributed the flooding to heavy rainfall in Nagaland, which received 85 mm of rain against a normal of 30.3 mm (excess of 181%) from July 18 to 20.

Residents reported flood waters rising over five feet, damaging homes, furniture, appliances, and vehicles, with one family's two-wheelers and car destroyed.
