Gen Z hikers lost due to poor preparation
The number of mountaineering incidents involving 17- to 25-year-olds in the Scottish Highlands has nearly quadrupled since 2022.
In 2018, 15% of rescues in the Highlands were 17- to 25-year-olds; last year that share was 25%.
France, Italy, and Switzerland have also seen increases in SOS calls from young hikers in recent years.
Ludovic Richard from France's mountain-safety observatory attributes the trend to the 'Instagram effect,' where young walkers take perilous risks for photos.
In December, two walkers in their 20s were rescued from Britain's second-highest mountain in -15°C temperatures wearing trainers and tracksuit bottoms.
