Crocodile attacks rise in UP's Terai as rivers swell

Crocodile attacks and sightings are increasing in Uttar Pradesh’s Terai region as rivers swell during monsoon.

Lakhimpur Kheri reported three deaths and one injury from crocodile attacks in the past 60 days.

On July 16, 2026, 12-year-old Sunil Singh was dragged into the Saryu river by a crocodile in Tikuri village.

Bahraich district also faced fatal incidents, prompting the Forest Department to step up surveillance and awareness campaigns.

At least five people died in crocodile attacks in Lakhimpur Kheri between September 2025 and July 16, 2026.
