Mumbai: Powai GCC Project Faces Fresh EC Row As Residents Question Rehabilitation Component, Seek EIA

B.H. Sharma, named as project proponent in a 2022 environmental clearance (EC), asserts approval is in place, but the EC describes the project as a 'Rehabilitation Scheme along with Sale Component' not as a Global Capability Centre (GCC).

Residents question the need for 3,986 rehabilitation flats, stating there is no slum around the Powai site.

The EC envisions 11 rehabilitation buildings, a three-wing commercial building, eight parking towers, population of 37,550, daily water demand of 3.053 million litres, and sewage generation of 2.72 million litres.

Activist B.N. Kumar says Sharma's clarification does not address the missing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report or transparency issues.

Powai ALM and 20 housing societies petitioned Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to review the project, citing overwhelming pressure on roads, infrastructure, and Powai Lake ecosystem.
