Yale study finds neural network in human heart

Yale University research published in Cell (July 2026) discovered a network of neurons in the heart's adipose tissue, called the intrinsic cardiac nervous system.

This neural network, comprising about 0.01% of heart cells, functions as a local command centre that regulates heartbeats and protects the organ during physical or physiological stress.

The study used genetically modified mice to identify two main neuron subtypes: Npy+ neurons and Ddah1+ neurons, each with distinct roles in heart function and protection.

These neurons not only relay signals from the brain but also process information locally to determine how the heart should respond to different situations.
