PMC to expand fire hydrant network in congested areas to improve emergency response

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) General Body approved a proposal to restore defunct fire hydrants and install new ones in congested areas, including slums, old city areas, markets, and high-risk zones.

The decision, made on Wednesday, addresses challenges from Pune's rapid expansion, where narrow lanes and dense habitation hamper firefighting and water supply during emergencies.

The plan includes a citywide survey to assess hydrant conditions, repair non-functional ones, install new hydrants in vulnerable locations, and create GIS-based digital mapping for faster identification.

PMC will conduct periodic inspections, preventive maintenance, and safety audits, while strengthening coordination between the Water Supply Department and the Fire Brigade.

The proposal was moved by corporator Suhas Tingre, who emphasized prioritizing citizens' safety and implementing the plan without delay to better prepare Pune for fire emergencies.
