Garry Sobers 1936-2026: ‘The greatest cricketer to walk the earth has left us’

Sir Garry Sobers, widely regarded as the greatest cricketer, passed away in 2026 at age 89.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar called it 'the saddest day for cricket' and described Sobers as 'the greatest cricketer to walk the earth'.

Sobers was an exceptional all-rounder who could bat, bowl fast and spin, and field brilliantly, as noted by former India player Chandu Borde.

During the 1958-59 tour of India, Sobers averaged 92.83 with three centuries in five Tests; as captain in 1966-67, he averaged 114 with five fifties.

Sobers was known for his warmth and love for racing; an anecdote recalled him prioritizing a horse race during a Test at Brabourne Stadium.
