US hikes visa bond fee for 50 countries; India not initially affected

The US State Department made its visa bond programme permanent from August 3, 2026, affecting 30 nations.
The visa bond requires certain B-1 (business) and B-2 (tourist) visa applicants to deposit a refundable bond of up to $20,000.
The bond is returned if the visa is refused or if the traveller leaves the US within the authorised period; it is forfeited if the visa holder overstays or violates conditions.
India is not on the list of 30 countries subject to the visa bond programme.
The programme previously applied to 50 countries and caused an 83% decline in business and tourist visas issued to citizens of listed countries.
