CPCB flags banned chemical in 'green' crackers
in5points
CPCB has objected to new 'green' firecrackers approved by CSIR-NEERI, citing they contain barium nitrate, a chemical banned by the Supreme Court.
CSIR-NEERI and TANFAMA developed formulations that reduce PM10 and PM2.5 emissions by 45-60% for light-emission fireworks such as flowerpots and sparklers.
CSIR-NEERI also approved joined crackers ('ladis'), which had been banned by the court, claiming 30% PM reduction and 32% less solid waste.
The Centre had tasked CSIR-NEERI to create green fireworks with over 50% pollution reduction in collaboration with manufacturers.
Two government organizations are taking contradictory positions in the Supreme Court on whether to allow commercial production of these next-generation crackers.
