Three weeks after UPSC sent panel to Punjab, suspense prevails over new DGP

Three weeks after the UPSC sent a panel of three eligible officers for the new Punjab Police chief, the state government has not announced the appointment.

The UPSC-approved panel includes acting DGP Gaurav Yadav, vigilance chief Sharad Satya Chauhan, and Special DGP Harpreet Singh.

Many bureaucrats believe Gaurav Yadav's elevation as regular DGP is likely due to his long tenure as acting police chief.

The Supreme Court's July 2018 ruling requires states to immediately appoint a DGP from the UPSC panel upon receiving it.

No official reason has been given for the delay; the chief minister has cleared other files but not the DGP appointment.
