Bengaluru records second-driest July in 108 years as monsoon falters

Bengaluru recorded 23mm of rainfall in July, its second-driest July in 108 years, surpassing only 1918's 18.5mm.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) scientist CS Patil attributed the dry spell to an offshore trough from south Gujarat to Kerala, which brought short-lived rain but is expected to weaken.

Bengaluru's cumulative southwest monsoon rainfall reached 94mm by end of July, below the typical 80–100mm for the month, despite initial surplus from pre-monsoon showers.

Annual rainfall remains near normal due to strong pre-monsoon precipitation, with IMD hoping for revival in August–September to reach normal levels.

Rainfall activity is forecast to revive between August 6 and 12, but may remain weak for much of August.
