Sri Lanka sentences ex-police chief, former defence secretary to death over 2019 Easter bombings

A Sri Lanka court sentenced ex-police chief Pujith Jayasundara and former defence secretary Hemasiri Fernando to death for failing to prevent the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings.
The bombings killed 279 people including 45 foreigners and were blamed on a homegrown Islamist extremist group.
A three-judge bench ruled in a majority decision that the officials failed in their duties to stop the attacks.
Jayasundara and Fernando can appeal against the sentence in the Supreme Court but have been remanded to judicial custody.
