Cauvery water issue: Tamil Nadu CM Vijay to meet Karnataka chief minister D K Shivakumar on August 3

Tamil Nadu CM C Joseph Vijay will meet Karnataka CM D K Shivakumar in Bengaluru on August 3 to discuss Tamil Nadu's share of Cauvery water on a pro-rata basis accounting for rainfall deficit.

The Karnataka government confirmed the meeting after a request from Tamil Nadu, which aims to exhaust bilateral talks before approaching the Supreme Court.

Opposition parties DMK and PMK urged Vijay to cancel the visit, warning that bilateral talks could undermine Tamil Nadu's legal position in the interstate water dispute.

Tamil Nadu seeks its proportionate share of water: if Karnataka received 40% of expected inflows, it should release 40% of Tamil Nadu's stipulated share. The Mekedatu project will also be on the agenda.

The state could not open the Mettur dam for irrigation on June 12 due to water shortfall, forcing delta farmers to rely on borewells instead of canal irrigation.
