President Donald Trump announced the US will formally investigate EU trade practices, claiming the bloc unfairly fined US tech giants like Google, Apple, Meta, and Amazon.

The announcement came after the EU fined Google 890 million euros ($1 billion) for violating digital antitrust rules by favoring its own services through Google Play and its search engine.

Trump threatened a substantial tariff on the EU, stating the penalties against US companies will be reversed and warned the EU will pay a big price.

The investigation will use Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, allowing the president to impose sanctions for unjustifiable or discriminatory trade practices.

Google stated it worked to comply with the EU's Digital Markets Act, while other companies and the European Commission had no immediate comment.
