From Acid Attack Survivor at 17 to Chevening Scholar at 29: The Unstoppable Journey of India’s Resham Fatma
Resham Fatma, 29, became the first Indian acid attack survivor to win a fully funded Chevening Scholarship to study at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
In 2014, at age 17, Fatma was attacked with acid and a knife in Lucknow after rejecting a marriage proposal; she fought back, which saved her from worse injuries.
In 2015, then-President Pranab Mukherjee honored Fatma with the Bharat Award, India's highest national bravery award for children.
Fatma will pursue an MSc in Gender, Development and Globalisation at LSE, announced on August 3, 2026.
Despite trauma, Fatma scored 87% in her Class 12 boards, continuing her education.
