Former Israeli military chief Gadi Eisenkot is challenging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the October 27 general election.

Eisenkot's newly formed Yashar party is marginally ahead of Likud in recent opinion polls.

The election is a referendum on Netanyahu's leadership after Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack and the Gaza war.
