‘Indian Supreme Court's workload unsustainable in long run’: UK judge Lord George Leggatt

UK Supreme Court judge Lord George Leggatt called the Indian Supreme Court's workload unsustainable in the long run.

The Indian Supreme Court receives about 90,000 cases annually and hears tens of thousands, while the UK Supreme Court hears fewer than 100 appeals a year.

Leggatt noted that India's growing economy and increased litigation will only add to the burden.

He suggested that simply appointing more judges is insufficient and that some form of reorganization of the system is needed.

Leggatt observed that most leading legal systems have a three-tier court structure, unlike the Indian Supreme Court which also exercises original jurisdiction.
