Now, Karnataka turns focus back to Mekedatu project, fresh DPR submission next week

Karnataka will submit a fresh detailed project report (DPR) for the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project to the Central Water Commission (CWC) next week.

The revised DPR addresses CWC's technical objections, including increased consumptive use from 4.7 to 6.9 tmcft and inclusion of Shivanasamudra power project and diversion weir.

The Rs 9,000-crore project, championed by Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, aims to store surplus Cauvery water for drinking water supply to Bengaluru and regulated release.

Improved inflows into Kabini and Harangi reservoirs have eased immediate water-sharing pressure with Tamil Nadu, allowing focus on the long-term project.

Karnataka maintains the project will not reduce Tamil Nadu's share under the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award.
