Mother survives 17 days in Australian rainforest

Shannon Leah Fraser survived 17 days alone in Queensland's tropical rainforest after becoming separated from her partner Heath Cassady near Golden Hole, Mount Bartle Frere, in September 2014.

She survived on river water, small fish, and insects, losing 16.9 kilograms and suffering severe sunburn, dehydration, and cuts.

Official search efforts were suspended after days without finding her; she emerged alive more than two weeks later.

The thought of her three children motivated her to keep moving even when exhausted, and she spent three days lying in a river to soothe burns.

Survival instructor Nick Vroomans said surviving alone is 'more mental than physical', with hope and determination as key factors.
