The National Green Tribunal issued a notice to the Centre and others over the deteriorating condition of Kanwar Lake in Bihar, Asia's largest oxbow lake.
The lake, a Ramsar Site since 2020, has fragmented from 63 sq km into smaller water bodies due to falling water levels and encroachment.
The bench noted a significant decline in fish population and biodiversity, with several native fish species disappearing from parts of the wetland.
The NGT impleaded the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Bihar government, CPCB, and National Biodiversity Authority as respondents.
