Ahead of Ramayana release, documentary to show how Ramanand Sagar made TV's Ramayan with no green screen, visual effects

A documentary on the making of Ramanand Sagar's TV series Ramayan is in development, announced by his grandson Shiv Sagar.

The show aired on Doordarshan from 1987-88 and used no green screens, computers, or visual effects, relying on rudimentary technology like linear editing and low-band U-matic video.

The documentary will feature interviews with cast, technicians, and their family members, focusing on the behind-the-scenes process.

Ramayan starred Arun Govil as Lord Rama, Deepika Chikhalia as Sita, Sunil Lahri as Lakshman, and was narrated by Ashok Kumar.

The documentary precedes Nitesh Tiwari's big-screen Ramayana film starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, which uses VFX from DNEG.
