NMC asks medical colleges to set up support units for students with disabilities
in5points
The National Medical Commission (NMC) mandates every medical college to set up an 'Enabling Unit' for students with benchmark disabilities.
The Enabling Unit will serve as a single point of contact for reasonable accommodation, academic and clinical support, and barrier-free learning.
The directive follows the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and Supreme Court directions for inclusive medical education.
Colleges must publicize the unit, coordinate with Disability Assessment Boards, and maintain confidential records of accommodation requests.
Clinical accommodations will allow students with disabilities to participate in training without compromising academic standards or patient safety.
