Maharashtra Traditional Fishermen Oppose Move To Allow Deep-Sea Fishing From Aug 1

Maharashtra traditional fishing communities criticized the state government for allowing deep-sea fishing beyond 12 nautical miles from August 1, despite an earlier extension of the monsoon ban to August 15.

Akhil Maharashtra Machhimar Kruti Samiti president Devendra Damodar Tandel said the sudden shift favors large commercial operators and leaves traditional fishermen unprepared for the early start.

The Union Ministry of Fisheries reiterated its annual seasonal ban in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) from June 1 to July 31 on the west coast and April 15 to June 14 on the east coast, with non-motorised traditional units exempt.

Tandel warned of a statewide agitation, arguing the policy allows commercial fleets to benefit while traditional fishermen bear the burden of marine conservation.
