Ulhasnagars Cash-Strapped Civic Body Faces Backlash Over ₹65 Lakh Guwahati Study Tour For Corporators

The Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) spent ₹65 lakh on a study tour for corporators in Guwahati, Assam, despite severe financial strain and ₹700 crore in outstanding liabilities.

The tour, organized by the All India Institute of Local Self-Government (AIILSG) from July 22 to July 26, cost ₹52,980 per corporator for accommodation and training at the Radisson Blu Hotel, plus ₹21,740 for air travel.

Political backlash and social media criticism followed, with opponents questioning the expense amid unmet civic needs like pothole-ridden roads, irregular water supply, and poor sanitation.

Mayor Ashwini Nikam defended the tour as necessary for training corporators on legislative procedures and ward planning, but the explanation failed to quiet public anger.
