India is pursuing the release of about 24 Indian nationals still serving in the Russian Army.

The Supreme Court directed the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to appoint a nodal officer to coordinate with families of Indians who died, were injured, or went missing after joining the Russian military.
The MEA must facilitate DNA matching of family members with mortal remains of Indians killed in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The MEA is to assist families in filing compensation claims with the Russian Embassy in New Delhi.
The Centre reported that 217 Indians joined the Russian military, with 49 deaths, six missing in action, and 23 others with unknown status.
Russian authorities lured recruits with financial packages, including a signing bonus of about USD 5,000, monthly salary of $2,500, and compensation of around USD 168,000 in case of death.
