On July 25, 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams dove into 8-to-10-foot waves at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz to rescue a 10-year-old boy from dangerous surf generated by Hurricanes Fausto and Genevieve.
Williams held the boy for nearly two minutes while being battered by waves before fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen helped bring both safely to shore.
The rescued boy, Nathaniel from Dallas, Texas, was assessed by paramedics and reunited with his family without life-threatening injuries.
President Donald Trump announced that Williams would be invited to the White House to receive a civilian honour for his bravery.
