Why in news

Background
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Gramin (PMAY-G) is a flagship scheme aimed at providing pucca houses to all rural households without a house or living in kutcha houses. It was launched in 2016 and is implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development.
Key facts
Unit assistance: ₹1,20,000 in plain areas; ₹1,30,000 in NE states, hill states (including J&K and Ladakh).
Additional ₹12,000 for toilet construction under convergence with Swachh Bharat Mission - Gramin (SBM-G).
Provision of unskilled wage employment under MGNREGA/VB G Ram Ji for house construction.
Total houses sanctioned under PMAY-G as of June 2026: 3,91,70,613.
Total houses completed: 3,08,66,128; pending: 83,04,485.
Top states with highest pending houses: Maharashtra (22,20,095), West Bengal (11,48,601), Madhya Pradesh (10,90,180).
States with zero pending: Arunachal Pradesh (all 35,591 completed).
Monitoring mechanisms include PRC meetings, EC meetings, CRM, field visits, and national-level monitors.
