Why in news
The government has introduced a FASTag-based annual pass for non-commercial cars, jeeps, and vans effective from August 15, 2025. Over 77 lakh annual passes have been issued by June 2026, facilitating 63 crore transactions. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways also announced the implementation of Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling using ANPR and RFID technologies.
Background
FASTag is an electronic toll collection system using RFID technology, part of the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) program. It was made mandatory for all vehicles from February 15, 2021. The system aims to reduce waiting time at toll plazas and improve transparency.
Key facts
Annual pass for non-commercial cars/jeeps/vans costs ₹3,075 for 2026-27, valid for one year or 200 free passages (whichever earlier) across all national highway/excessway toll plazas.
By June 2026, over 77 lakh annual passes issued, resulting in 63 crore transactions at national highway toll plazas.
Annual pass transactions constitute about 33% of total ETC transactions from cars/jeeps/vans.
Over 98% of user fee collection on national highways is done via FASTag under NETC.
Grievance redressal mechanisms: toll-free helpline 1033, email falsededuction@ihmcl.com, FASTag issuer bank helpline, and Rajmargyatra app.
FASTag transactions involve a secure ecosystem: toll management system, acquirer bank, NPCI as clearing house, and issuer bank.
Two expert committees recommended further deliberation on GPS-based barrier-free tolling considering security and privacy.
Government decided to implement Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) using ANPR/AI analytics and RFID-based FASTag for uninterrupted tolling.
17 toll plazas awarded for MLFF; 5 already live: Choryasi (Surat, Gujarat), Mundka (Delhi), Gharounda (Haryana), Manoharpura (Rajasthan), Daulatpura (Rajasthan).
Tenders invited for 104 additional toll plazas for MLFF.
