The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has licensed indigenous technologies for cervical pre-cancer treatment and next-generation vaccines to Indian pharmaceutical companies. This move aims to improve access to affordable treatment and vaccines, reducing dependence on imported technologies.
Background
Cervical cancer is one of the leading cancers among Indian women. Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN) is a precancerous condition caused by persistent HPV infection. Current treatment often involves surgery to remove abnormal cells. ICMR's Patent Mitra initiative helps convert government-funded research into marketable products.

SHetA2 selectively destroys HPV-infected abnormal cells while sparing healthy cells, offering a less invasive alternative to surgery.

One vaccine is a next-generation typhoid vaccine; the other targets typhoid, paratyphoid, and Shigella infections.
The technologies were transferred under ICMR's Medical Innovations Patent Mitra initiative.
Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary, Department of Health Research and DG, ICMR, emphasized strengthening India's biomedical innovation ecosystem.
The products will undergo further development, clinical testing, and regulatory approval before public use.
