A major international AIDS conference in Rio de Janeiro highlighted that global funding for HIV fell by 18% in 2025, with US and European aid cuts threatening decades of progress. UNAIDS warned that the fight against HIV is at a critical juncture, with political will at a new low despite scientific advances.

HIV has been transformed from a fatal diagnosis to a manageable disease due to scientific breakthroughs and massive funding. However, international financing for HIV in developing countries has been declining, with European contributions falling 58% since 2011 and US aid slashed after Donald Trump's return to the White House in 2025.
