Union Minister of Culture and Tourism informed Lok Sabha about the National Cultural Mapping Mission (NMCM) and its initiative Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar (MGMD) in a written reply on July 20, 2026. The mission documents village-level cultural resources but does not register artists or provide financial assistance.
Background
The National Cultural Mapping Mission (NMCM) was launched to document India's diverse cultural heritage at the grassroots level. Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar (MGMD) is its key initiative for village-level cultural mapping.

Primary objective of MGMD is documentation of rural cultural heritage including folk traditions, art, history, and cultural assets.
Currently, there is no provision to link the cultural mapping database with tourism, education, or skill development initiatives.
